In Praise of Shadows, (Japan 2018)
A photographic meditation in three parts

This series is an ode to subtlety, silence, and the unseen — a visual exploration inspired by Junichirō Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows, where beauty dwells not in the brilliant or the bold, but in the delicate gradations of light and dark, presence and absence.

Each of the three movements in this work draws from traditional Japanese aesthetics and philosophies, offering a space for stillness and contemplation.

Shinzan yûkoku – the mystery of wild nature.

Inyo – yin-yang; the negative (dark, female, moon) forces and the positive (light, male, sun) forces.

Mono no aware  – an awareness of impermanence or transience of things.
