A stone cutter’s workshop, Kyoto, Japan
Nishimura’s stone lantern workshop is based in north-east Kyoto. Stone carving at this site dates back five generations to the Edo period. Daizo Nishimura is the 5th-generation stonecarver/owner and son of Kenzo Nishimura. The garden was created around 20 years ago as a way to house and display the inventory; a magical space littered with generations of lanterns and other stone-carved items that are left to age for a period of at least 2 years but many of these pieces are much older.
